Jungyul Yu

In my painting, I visually record personal times and spaces by depicting scenes among many still shots that are scattered in my conscious and subconscious realms. These visual journals often portray simple landscapes and landscape-like, abstract images during different seasons and times of day. I try to convey memories of travelling and feelings such as happiness, uneasiness, and the status of my mind while painting or during dreams and daydreams.

I mainly paint with oil and mixed media. Among other materials, I incorporate photographs and found objects (such as tree bark, yarn, and leaves) into my paintings. Occasionally, writings in Korean (my native language), English (my second language), and French (which I studied in Korea) appear in my work in forms of a few words, short sentences or fragments. Dates appearing on the paintings mark birthdays and commemorative days throughout my past and present.
